Overview

Is it possible that here in North America, the ubiquitous RSC style case, void-filled with either peanuts, kraft paper, or air pillows might lull us into believing that there is not a better method? That could be exactly the case, as over 700 successful installations in Europe -would seem to indicate, where void filling, even with biodegradable material could eventually become a thing of the past. The process starts by erecting a tray with integral poly film. This enables you to select boxes from a wide variety of corrugated suppliers. The tray has no flaps to interfere with the picking process, which also saves cardboard; in certain form factors this can be up to 15% savings. Plus, in automated conveying applications, the tray rides more smoothly and is more resistant to spinning or jamming than an RSC style box.

Process

Once the order is complete, the pickers simply flip the poly material over the product. The box travels through a shrink tunnel where the poly is collapsed down onto the product. (There is no significant heat transfer to the product, thus it is safe for the most sensitive pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and cosmetics). This creates a “hammock” that eliminates the need for void fill and provides fantastic protection. The package is also returnable-friendly; by using a tear strip on the bottom of the box, items can be easily reshipped in the original packaging. The completed box has a premium look, is 30-40% stronger than a conventional RSC box, resulting in less shipping damage, or possibly the ability to use thinner wall cardboard for even greater savings. The box is also tamper evident, unlike an RSC box. Finally the boxes are easy to stack; as a part of the services included we review the box sizes relative to order and cube information and often are able to reduce the number of different box sizes.
