Why It's Great To Work In Material Handling As A Millennial

Here at StreamTech, we have a few Millennials among us. Who will admit to identifying with this cohort is still out for debate. We work hard and have a little fun in between. (See what we accomplished last year.)

If you would have asked me when I graduated if I knew what I was going to be doing with my degree I would have listed every other industry before material handling. Why do you ask? Plain and simple, I had no idea it existed.

To spread the word and shed some light on why working in the material handling field can be an excellent option for the Millennial and beyond generations we compiled a few perks below.

You feel a part of something: According to MHI, Material Handling, a role in the grand scheme of the Supply Chain Industry, is defined as:

"Material handling is the movement, protection, storage and control of materials and products throughout manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, consumption, and disposal. As a process, material handling incorporates a wide range of manual, semi-automated and automated equipment and systems that support logistics and make the supply chain work."

Seeing your hard work pay off in results is fulfilling. You have the opportunity to touch many pieces of a company and know that your actions had a part in the effect.

Material Handling is a vast field to explore your skills and apply them across the Supply Chain: This industry is unique because it allows you to test your abilities. You may not be the planner type, but you are a people person. There is a fit for almost every skill set within the supply chain. Trial and error can show you your strengths and how best to apply them. Furthermore, MHI goes on to outline the applications that various skill sets in material handling support:

  • Forecasting

  • Resource allocation

  • Production planning

  • Flow and process management

  • Inventory management and control

  • Customer delivery

  • After-sales support and service

Every day is different:

New people, processes and challenges arise every day. This industry is ever-evolving. One day it could be optimizing throughput to allocate personnel better. The next could be forecasting what the future quarter sales will look like. Keeping you on your toes means staying engaged and interested.

It is a crash course in many facets of the business world: Many positions play direct roles in impacting the success of a company. From forecasting, production, delivery, and support, they all play their part in the recipe of the material handling. Seeing and understanding the supply chain industry as a whole gives a unique view of business operations and how they interact with one another.
